you to share your contact information with
other applications in many ways.

printing your contact information to any

Installing this demonstration version of Dynodex is easy. Just copy the Dynodex Demo folder onto your hard disk drive.
To open an existing file from within Dynodex:
Choose Open from the “File” menu. This will close the current Dynodex file and open a dialog where you navigate to select the desired file and click the Open button.
Insider’s Tip: Set Startup
You can set both the Dynodex application to open automatically to your preferred address file. This is called the “Set Startup” feature.
To Open Your Preferred Address File at Startup:
1 Choose Preferences from the “Edit” menu.
2 Select the Startup File checkbox.
3 Click the Set Startup button. In the file dialog, select the file you want to start with every time you launch the Dynodex.
4 Click OK.
CHAPTER 2: ENTERING RECORDS;
Entering A New Record
To create a new record, choose "New Record" from the Record menu, or type Cmd-N.
Tabbing Between Fields
To go from one field to the next, press the tab button. For example, type your First Name, tab, and type your Last Name.
Dynodex Typing Shortcuts
Dynodex has some features that make fast and accurate data entry simple for anyone — even if you don’t type well! Shorthand Keys lets you type one or more letters and Dynodex fills in the entire word or phrase. To add your own shorthand keys, select the Shorthand Keys... item from the Edit menu. Dynodex can also automatically capitalize words if you turn on Initial Caps in the Entry Setup dialog.
Importing
If you have your data in any other Macintosh application, you can probably import it into Dynodex. (No need to retype it!) Dynodex will even remember what order your fields are in. More information on importing is provided later in this file.
Attention HyperCard, QuickDex, Focal Point, and other free-form database users! You can use DynoStack™ (included on the Dynodex program disk) to translate your data into a text file that Dynodex (and other applications) can read. DynoStack comes with its own instructions on how to use it.
CHAPTER 3: FINDING RECORDS
There is nothing faster than Dynodex at finding the name, number, address, or note you need.
Use the "Find..." command in the Find menu to find any record (or series of records) containing specific text. With the Find command, you can search in all fields to find the text, or just one specific field.
Frequent Finds
Frequently used find strings can be saved under the Frequent Finds sub menu, where you can easily select them.
CHAPTER 4: MARKING, SELECTING, and SORTING;
Dynodex provides more ways for you to sort, group, mark and select your data than any other contact manager!
With Dynodex, you can:
Mark records— Mark individual records to help locate
them or to group a set of records
together.
Select records— This allows you to see a subset of
all your records. You can select
records based on the contents of a
field (such as all the people in
California), or you can select all
the marked records.
Sort— You can sort your records to display or print
in any order.
How to Mark Records
There are TWO ways to mark individual records. In each case, the check mark symbol for the marked record appears in the entry screen and next to the record name in any list window.
1. You can mark records in a list window by
clicking to the left of the record name you
wish to mark.
2. You can mark a record in the entry screen by
clicking on the “mark box” in the upper right-
hand corner.
How to Select records
Select Records is one of the most powerful commands in Dynodex. Whereas Find will get you to one record at a time, selecting records in Dynodex enables you to “select” a subset of records that have something particular in common.
Select Records Command
1. Choose Select Records from the “Select” menu.
2. Click in the Field 1 pop-up list of fields and
select the field that you wish to select records on.
3. Click in the Field 1 pop-up list of operators
(the middle pop-up) and select “contains”.
4. Type a name in the Field 1 text box.
5. Click Select. Dynodex will instantly select the
records that meet the criteria.Frequent
Selections (A Shortcut to Select Records).
How to sort
1. Choose the “Sort” command from the records
menu.
2. Press the “Sort” button in the sort dialog.
Dynodex then instantly sorts your records
according to the criteria set in the sort dialog.
CHAPTER 5: PRINTING
One of the best things about Dynodex is its flexible printing capabilities. Dynodex will print your personal information, any way you like, in these four basic formats:
Address books (including “personal organizers”)
Labels
Rotary cards
Envelopes
How to Print a Double-Sided Address Book:
1. Open any Dynodex address file.
2. Select Choose Layout from the “Layouts” menu.
3. Choose the “106 Dynodex Classic” layout.
4. Choose Print from the “File” menu.
5. In the Print dialog, be sure to check the Preview
check box.
6. Click OK to proceed. Dynodex will display a pre-
view window showing how your address pages will
print on each sheet of paper.
7. If you’re ready to print, place some Dynodex 106
Paper in your paper tray. Use plain paper to test-
print. Click Start Printing to proceed.
IMPORTANT: Paper positioning for double-sided printing is very important. If you are new to Dynodex, and you are ready to print with Dynodex paper, please read the section on “Paper Handling”, at the end of this document.
8. While Dynodex is printing the first sides of your
double-sided pages, it puts up the “second sides
dialog”. Wait until all the first sides have emer-
ged from your printer. Then put them back into the
paper tray exactly as they emerged. Click the
Print button to print the second sides. Dynodex
takes care of the rest!

return address on the envel-
ope.
To create a return address, just type in the correct address and check the box labeled “Display Return Address.”
Set Address Position: Defines the position of the
mailing address on the envel-
ope.
Post Net Barcodes: Check this box if you want
Dynodex to print your envelopes
with Post Net barcodes.
CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING
If you have already entered your address list into another computer application, you can get that list into Dynodex by importing it.
Importing a Database File
To import from a database file, you just have to export your database information to a text file, in either tab- or comma-delimited format. (Most good databases export their data in both formats.). Because the database already has set up the information in fields and records, you don’t have to do anything further to prepare it for Dynodex.
1. Make note of the order of the fields in your database.
2. Export the data.
3. Open Dynodex and select the “Import” command from
the File menu.
4. Choose the appropriate fields to enter your imported
data into and press the “Import” button.
CHAPTER 7: DIALING
If you spend a significant portion of your day on the telephone, why not make use of the dialing capabilities in Dynodex? Both the Dynodex application and the Dynodex DA can dial any phone number in your Dynodex file. The dialing feature works with most types of phone systems, modems, and other dialing devices.
Setting Your Dialing Preferences
When you first open Dynodex, the dialing feature is not turned on. To turn it on, and to specify the settings that will conform to your phone system, you choose Preferences from the “Edit” menu.
• Phone Dialing: Check this box to turn on the dialing feature.
• Tone/Pulse Dial: Choose Tone if you are dialing through a touch-tone phone system, or Pulse if you are dialing through a rotary telephone system.
• Use Which Port: Select the icon that represents which port you are dialing through.
• Local Area Code: Type your local area code here. This tells Dynodex not to dial that area code from your location.
• Prefix: Here’s where you should type any “access”, or “dial-out” prefix required to dial all phone numbers.
• Long Distance Prefix: This is where you should type a prefix for dialing outside your area code.
How to Dial
1. Click in the Phone 1 field and choose Dial from the
“Record” menu.
2. Double-click on Phone 1 in the entry screen or in
any list window.
PAPER HANDLING
Because Dynodex prints different layouts in different ways on a sheet of paper, it is important to understand how to handle the paper with your printer. The key to working with paper is knowing your printer’s “paper path”. Once you know the paper path, you can position paper correctly in the paper tray for both single- and double-sided printing.
The Paper Path
The “paper path” for any printer involves two criteria:
• What side of the paper does the printer print to? (Top or bottom?)
• How does the printer feed the paper through? (Head-in or head-out?)
Printing Double-Sided — How Different Printers Work:
Dynodex offers the option of printing double-sided address-books. Printing double-sided requires that you know how to place the paper back in the paper tray to print the second pass. This depends on knowing your printer’s paper path.
Double-sided printing is a 2-step process:
1. Wait for all the first sides to print and emerge from
the printer.
2. Take the complete stack of first sides without re-
shuffling and place them back into the paper tray.
You may need to rotate the entire stack of printed sheets before printing the second sides depending on your printer’s paper path.
